How much Personal Trainers Earn?

How Much Personal Trainers Earn

How much Personal Trainers earn is one of the most common questions that you will want to know before beginning a career as a Personal Trainer. The average pay for Personal Trainers in the UK is between £30-£40 per hour.

Let us use an example of a Personal Trainer operating 10 clients who take an average of 2 sessions per week. This will create an annual income of £36,400 if we use this example with an average of £35 per hour.

This can obviously scale up or down depending on the amount of clients you have. If you live in London the average hourly rate for a personal training session is much higher. We will cover this in section 2.

10 clients at 2 sessions per week equates to 20 hours of personal training sessions however it will be more like 25-30 hours per week to fully build your clients plans, and you will want to also plan in time to contribute to other aspects of your business like marketing and financial planning.

How much personal trainers earn will increase further if you run an online service in addition to your face-to-face delivery.

Finally, your earnings will then decrease from your net total when subtract your expenses. Your expenses may include things like any software or apps you purchase to store your clients data or use to email them. It may also include things like advertising costs or accountancy costs.

Our Experience of what The Fitness Group Graduates Earn

Most of our graduates at The Fitness Group have an average of 12 clients and with an average of 25 sessions per week by the end of 12 months. This number of sessions will generate an annual revenue of;

£45,000 for your new business if you deliver 25 sessions per week at £35 per hour

£39,000 for your new business if you deliver 25 sessions per week at £30 per hour

As you can see how much personal trainers earn varies and so too does the time it takes them to build their client base to double figures. Usually clients tend to take 2 sessions a week on average, some will want 3 sessions and others 1 per week. We recommend when forecasting your income against your business targets you should double your number of expected sessions by your client goals.

I.e. 10 Clients = 20 Expected Sessions. 20 Expected Sessions x £XX = Revenue.

We have support 10,000’s of students to take their first steps in the industry and we have found that within the first few months most graduates have a handful of clients. A handful of clients are not handed to you when you qualify though! Building a relationship with clients, earning their trust and marketing your business effectively is vital to gaining your 1st client, your 5th client or your 10th client! When you gain clients your service must be excellent to keep your clients. Your client results and the five star exceptional service you provide will be a key pillar to your long term business success.

“You must build a rewarding, engaged relationship with your clients. Your role is to deliver exceptional value which creates long term results that supports your clients achieving their goal. This is fundamental to your business success!”

Therefore, how much personal trainers earn earn per year can vary depending on several factors so now that we have a rough estimate of how much a Personal Trainer may earn let us look at the 3 top things that will determine how much YOU will earn.

There are variations in the average cost of personal training services depending on your location. In London for example the cost of a personal training session can sit anywhere between £75-£100+.

However, in many of the cities across the UK the average cost of a PT sessions will sit in the bracket of £30-£40 per hour.

The price per session can also vary depending on the micro region, if it is an affluent area then the cost per session will be higher.

With the growth of online personal training services, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic, the variations in online coaching prices will be less likely to be a result of the area and the price per session will be affected by the other key factors listed in this free report.

It has been great to see many of our graduates pivot their business during the pandemic and continue to offer support to their clients. The demands from society for support, education and guidance to get fit and healthy have not disappeared during the pandemic, arguably the need for support on things like mindset, nutrition and maintaining a healthy lifestyle has grown.

Rather than wait for the return of face to face personal training sessions its been fantastic to see fitness professionals all over the country respond with creative ideas to keep their clients accountable and on track. Whilst it has no doubt been a tough year many of our graduates and personal trainers in the industry have been successful in graduating and growing the business beyond the pre-lockdown levels.

Tip – Research your local area to research what the personal trainers near you are charging for face-to-face personal training sessions. Specifically look at any personal trainers that you may know either personally or from following their online content and check what they are charging.

This will allow you to get a feel for their prices relative to both their location and your perceived opinion of their skill.

Education – Start with Passion!

Your first steps to becoming a Personal Trainer is to educate yourself to gain your personal training qualifications.

Before you take the step to begin your qualifications though you must first ask yourself the question,

“Is this a career that I will be passionate about?”

The fitness industry requires that you have a passion as pre-requisite if you are to have a long and successful career.

It not an industry where you can ‘fake it’ – at least not in the long term. If you choose to follow the path to become a personal trainer the rewards are huge, both intrinsically and extrinsically, however it is also extremely demanding.

You have the chance to make a difference to the lives of your clients, whether that is by providing stress and pain reliving excellent sports massages or developing life changing habits and education your future personal training clients.

Education – Gain your Qualifications!

To take your first steps into the industry you must first gain your qualifications. This is the start of your learning journey and it is a vital first step.Choose a training provider that has clear explicit values to supporting your journey. Ask yourself;

Does the training provider demonstrate that they are they passionate about what they do?

Look at the training providers social media platforms (usually Instagram), this gives you a great insight into what real students are saying about their experiences. What content is the provider sharing and do you get a sense of community support from student reviews? Do they care what they share, and do they clearly demonstrate the support to their students?

It may seem strange to start with social media however, how a company engages with its customers online (and how its customers engage with the company) is vital to almost all businesses and gives you a great insight into the level of customer satisfaction.

You too will use social media as a space for you to engage with your community personal training clients. It is an platform for you to share your values, your beliefs and create valuable content to educate your audience.

Your education journey to gain your qualifications will equip you with the skills and knowledge that will enhance your ability to deliver great client results. Your future clients will choose you over others because they view you as a knowledgeable and professional. The first thing to check is what support the training provider will give you throughout your learning journey.

The expert tutor support will you receive, and the available support, are key differences that separates training providers. Look at whether you can access all the resources online. Do you have additional valuable resources like live tutor led lectures available and how will you get in touch with your tutor if you need support?

Will you get in touch with your tutor by email or can you get them on the phone by WhatsApp, text, or phone call?

Will your tutor be able to schedule a bespoke online meeting with you to help support queries as you move through your journey, thus able to share their screen and talk you through your questions?

These are the values and standards that we ensure are present for every student that studies with us at The Fitness Group. Most of our students use WhatsApp to communicate daily throughout their life, so in my opinion its our job to meet our students where they want to be met!

Tip – Research start by looking at the training providers social media channels, and also check out their Trust Pilot reviews. The level of support you receive will be the key ingredient in your journey. Education – Course Accreditation

Another question you will have will be whether your course is recognised.

You want to ensure that all your efforts to study and gain your qualifications leads to a you gaining the a qualification of the highest possible industry standards and you obtain a qualification that is recognised both nationally and internationally.

At The Fitness Group, Active IQ are our awarding body, and our courses are regulated by Ofqual. Active IQ are the leading awarding body in the UK and their courses are recognised all over the world. We have graduates in Europe, Australia, Dubai and many more places around the world. The Active IQ course syllabus which we follow, and their rigorous industry standards have long been held as the leading standard within the industry.

It is possible to obtain a personal training qualification by doing less work by studying with a provider who is awarded by another awarding body, but what good would that do for your future career?

CIMSPA is the Charted Body for the industry, (replacing and enhancing on what Reps provided for the industry). We are a CIMSPA Employer Partner. Any of the students who complete our qualifications can register as a CIMSPA practitioner at the Personal Training Level when they complete our Level 3 Personal Training Course.

Tip – Most training providers will offer courses that are recognised by a third party organisation. The key is to ask who recognises the course.

Is the course awarded by Active IQ?

Is the Training Provider a CIMSPA partner? Not just that their courses are recognised by are their courses recognised by CIMSPA and is the training provider a CIMSPA partner themselves?

Invest in your Business!

We believe its so important to invest in your business right from the start.

You should believe in your product and if you have followed step 2 then you will already be on the path to making your first investment in your future business by gaining your qualifications. However, it must not stop here.

Not all investments are financial investments either, making the conscious and planned decision to grow your knowledge is an investment in your business. You are swapping your time, the most precious of all commodities, for a future investment. This type of investment will always provide the greatest return on investment too, what you invest in continuing to grow your knowledge can literally super charge your business value and your future career.

A new book every month can cost under £10 with an audible subscription on Amazon and provide spark valuable creative ideas for you to be more effective at marketing your business.

Once you reach a point where the demand for your services outstrips the supply, ie, you have a waiting list of clients for the times you are willing to work, you can gradually increase the price that you charge for each session.

Another investment that I recommend is that you plan to complete a new CPD each year. You should continue to grow what knowledge you can pass onto your clients and what clients you can serve. If you choose to upskill yourself in our Level 3 Pre and Post Natal Qualification, it will not only open a new target market for your business, but it will grow your understanding of the changes the female body during pregnancy and how you can support with both exercise and nutrition.

This wider understanding builds trust and confidence amongst your clients who are not pregnant. Becoming pregnant will be one of the most important times in your female client’s life, remember you are there to support their health. Will you be there to support them when they tell you that they are pregnant, and they ask you how your training sessions together will change, or will you pass on your client who you have a wonderful relationship with to another trainer?

Tip – Don’t view your qualifications that you gain coming into the industry as the first and last step in your education journey. Continuing to invest in your new business will lead to growing demand, customers and a higher level of career earnings. Your investments will also lead to higher levels of satisfaction and intrinsic motivation.

Your clients results will grow as your experience grows and your ability to market these services and results will get better as you learn. Thus you will attract more clients and you will be able to help more people!
