We are a CIMSPA partner and offer a range of courses to help you become an amazing gym instructor or personal trainer – with all the extra training you might need to be successful.

There is a lot more to consider when you are looking for a job in the fitness industry than just a Diploma, however.

Step-by-Step: Your Guide to Becoming a Fitness Professional

Every journey starts with a single step, and the road to your new career is no different.

The first thing you need to consider is what role you want to have in the industry. Do you want to become a specialist personal trainer, taking an individual interest in creating plans to help different people improve their health and fitness? Or would you prefer to be a Gym Instructor, working in a leisure centre to offer group fitness classes and help with everyday fitness?

Whatever your role, you need to think about whether you would prefer a busy gym or a posh health club. Would you rather be a self-employed personal trainer, travelling to clients and training wherever suits them? Or are you thinking of becoming a yoga instructor and teaching in the local community halls?

When it comes to any role in the fitness industry, it is important to get qualified. For some entry-level and apprentice roles, there is an opportunity for you to learn as you go, acquiring a qualification while working. However, for the more advanced diplomas (like Personal Training), you may need to get the qualification before the job.

Get learning as soon as possible. Once you know the direction you want to go in, you can start training straight away. Choose a course that is CIMSPA and REPs accredited so that it is recognised in the industry. Here at The Fitness Group our Level 3 Gym Instructing and Personal Training course is recognised by REPs, CIMSPA and Ofqual – so completion of the course will lead to a diploma that will set you apart from other personal trainers.

Once you have qualified, you can start to look for work. Check job boards and postings speak to trainers in your gym and be sure to look out for our extra modules on business skills if you do decide to set up on your own.

Don’t forget, once you have achieved your Level 3 Diploma, you can still take your studies further – specialising in a certain type of personal training with a Level 4 Diploma and additional training when necessary.
