What to look out for to find a gym you love in Manchester
When searching for the perfect gym in Manchester, you need to consider several important factors. Let’s take a look.
Opening hours
Gym operating hours can vary significantly. Some gyms offer 24-hour access with scan-in or pincode memberships, allowing you to train whenever it suits you. Other private gyms may have more limited hours, often centred around the working day, with classes in the early morning, lunchtime and evening. Semi-private gyms sometimes provide a combination of open gym access and small group training sessions. When choosing a gym, take your schedule into account and ensure that the gym’s hours align with your availability.
Location
Although Manchester isn’t an enormous city, its size is significant enough for location to play a role in your gym choice. From the south-west corner at Castlefield, to the north-west part in Ancoats and to the south-west near the universities, it’s essential to select a gym that’s convenient for you. Consider factors such as proximity to your home, work and transport links, as well as your working hours, to ensure that the gym’s location fits easily into your daily routine.
Type of gym
Manchester offers a wide range of gym types, so it’s crucial to determine what kind of experience you’re looking for. Are you interested in personal training, group sessions, or prefer to train independently in an open gym setting? Do you require specialist weightlifting equipment or are you more focused on cardio? Answering these questions will help narrow down your options and guide you towards the most suitable gym for your needs.
Facilities and equipment
The quality and variety of facilities and equipment can greatly impact your gym experience. Some people seek out top-class machines and barbells from renowned brands like Eleiko, Cybex and Hammer Strength, whilst others prioritise nice added extras like saunas, well-maintained changing facilities and swimming pools. Before making a decision, consider what you want from a gym and the goals you have. Day passes can be incredibly useful for experiencing a gym’s facilities firsthand before committing to a membership.
Atmosphere and staff
The atmosphere and staff at a gym can make a significant difference in your overall experience. If you plan to visit the gym several times a week, it’s important to feel comfortable and welcome. Friendly faces, whether in the open gym or during classes and personal training sessions, can greatly contribute to your motivation and enjoyment. A positive atmosphere can also enhance the social aspect of training, making your gym visits something to look forward to.
Membership and cost
Gym memberships come in various forms, such as fixed contracts, weekly passes, rolling monthly memberships or bespoke agreements. It’s important to understand what your membership includes, such as the number of sessions or classes you can attend. Costs can vary widely, ranging from £20 per month for basic memberships to £20 per session for top-class private facilities. Your budget will likely be a key factor in your decision-making process, so be sure to consider the value you’re getting for your money when comparing gym memberships.
